Hey there algatalkers. Welcome to another episode of the Algatalk Podcast.
In this episode, Jack talks with Dr Lauren Biermann, who is a marine remote sensing scientist with a background in molecular biology, oceanography, biogeochemistry, and optics. In 2018, she joined the Plymouth Marine Laboratory, where Jack met her for this algatalk.
Her research is primarily focused on the detection of floating plastic debris in rivers and coastal waters using high-resolution imagery collected by satellites in space.
Jack and Lauren discuss how these satellites can detect algae, from toxic algal blooms to seaweed farms offshore in China. Dr Biermann leads the EU-MET-SAT Ocean training contract, teaching graduate students and early-career scientists the skills to independently access and apply remotely sensed data across the Copernicus Marine Data Stream Service. EU-MET-SAT is The European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites which is responsible for the launch and operation of the European systems of meteorological satellites and for delivering the satellite data to end-users as well as contributing to the operational monitoring of climate and the detection of global climate changes.
Enjoy listening to this fascinating episode and don’t forget to share it with someone who may need a bit more algae stuff in their life. Also, don’t forget to rate our show on Apple Podcasts if you like what you hear. It keeps our hopes up and prolongs the show’s life.
Thank you and we’ll see you in the next one!
